Interruptions regarding EMI is very common. This is now being addressed through DECT technology.

If you are about to purchase a portable bar code scanner now or later, search for those with good batteries. Those that can handle hours of use and will only need a few number of hours of recharging. Some will give you the option to use wireless technology or USB connection with the aid of a USB cable.
