Barcode 13

A barcode is a machine-readable representation of information in a visual format on a surface. Barcode is widely used to implement Auto ID Data Capture (AIDC) systems that improve the speed and accuracy of computer data entry.

A barcode printer is a computer peripheral for printing barcode labels or tags that can be attached to physical objects. Barcode printers are commonly used to label cartons before shipment, or to label retail items with Universal Product Codes.

Desktop barcode printer has become a commonplace tool for entering product information at retail chains and shopping complexes. Industrial barcode printers are used in manufacturing facilities and large warehouses helping in inventory management and sales process automation.

The most common barcode standards are UPCs and EANs.

Universal Product Code Bar Code – The standard bar code printed on retail merchandise. It contains the vendor’s identification number and the product number which is read by passing the bar code over a scanner.

European Article Numbering is the European standard for barcodes. There are two different versions of EAN bar codes, EAN-13 and EAN-8, which encode 13- and 8-digit numbers, respectively. A special EAN-13 bar code with a 5-digit supplemental code is used on books to encode the International Standard Book Number (ISBN) and the price. This bar code is called “Bookland”.

Traditional one-dimensional bar codes use the bar’s width to encode a product or an account number. Two-dimensional bar codes, such as PDF417, MaxiCode and DataMatrix, are scanned horizontally and vertically and hold considerably more data. PDF417 is widely used for general purposes. MaxiCode is used for high-speed sorting, and DataMatrix is used for marking small parts.

Barcode Printers employ two major printing methods – Direct Thermal (DT) and Thermal Transfer (TT).

Direct thermal printers use a print head to generate heat that causes a chemical reaction in specially designed paper that turns the paper black. Direct thermal printers are generally less expensive, but they produce labels that can become illegible if exposed to heat, direct sunlight, or chemical vapors. Barcode printers require regular cleaning of the ribbon and the print head. Specks of dust may cause distortion of the bar codes. The outputs of these printers using ANSI software need to be continuously checked in order to check for system malfunctions.

Thermal transfer printers also use heat, but instead of acting directly on the paper, the heat melts a waxy or resin substance on a ribbon that runs over the label or tag material. The heat transfers ink from the ribbon to the paper. Thermal Transfer requires the use of a heated ribbon to produce long-lasting images of data onto a label and/or tag, whereas Direct Thermal process prints the image directly on the label/tag.

Direct thermal and thermal transfer barcode printers can print bar code labels on variety of media. The range of bar code printers vary from light duty printers to rugged and high speed industrial printers for meeting diverse requirements. In industrial printers, the range varies from medium to heavy duty to extra heavy duty printers. These printers can be integrated to existing applications / ERP for on demand label/tag printing.

Industrial barcode printers are used in large warehouses and manufacturing facilities. They have large paper capacities, operate faster and have a longer service life. For retail and office environments, desktop barcode printers are most common.

Barcode Tracking

Barcode Tracking

Barcode Tracking

With the recent advancements in technology and the huge price reductions in the cost of barcode printers and barcode scanners, business owners are embracing barcoding technology for accurate tracking of their inventory.

However, there are other uses for barcoding than just to keep track of your inventory. Here are just three other ways you can use barcoding in your business:

(1) Tracking Paperwork / Invoices – A high quality Point of Sale (POS) software will allow you to print a barcode at the top of each invoice, receipt, purchase order, credit note, or any other paperwork you print out on a regular basis. This way, if a client brings back an item or if you simply want to enter in an invoice number or purchase order, you can just scan the barcode on the page instead of having to manually type in the document number.

This improves accuracy and makes dealing with paperwork more manageable.

(2) Tracking Employees – Through the use of employee id cards with printed barcodes on them, you can track employees signing in/out for their shifts. Simply assign an employee barcode card to each employee and have them scan in/out of the system when they start and end their shifts. This once again improves tracking accuracy for payroll, and also improves your security as well.

(3) Tracking Customers – Similarly to tracking customers, you can assign customers a customer loyalty card with a printed barcode on it and each time the customer purchases something you can simply scan their card and track their purchases. This is much more convenient and secure than having the customer tell you their phone number or name as a way of tracking them. Most customers don’t like saying their phone number out loud with a lineup of people standing behind them listening but won’t hesitate to hand you a card with their barcoded customer number imprinted on it.

These are just three ways in which you can use barcode printers and barcode scanners to improve your business.

Barcodes are printed identification labels comprising a pattern of black bars and spaces. Different sets of these patterns combine to form a symbology. Barcodes may all appear to be the same but a closer look reveals that there are minute differences in the length and width of bars. A symbology is similar to a language except that it pertains to barcodes, and there are at least a hundred different barcode symbologies. It is part of the mapping between messages and barcodes. Each symbology of barcodes has its own unique characteristics and features, which have distinct technical advantages. Symbologies are selected on the basis of these advantages and are often specified by the company using barcodes. Selection of barcode symbologies is dependent on a set of features including the following:

1. Set of Symbols: Symbologies have a limited character set for encoding. For instance, Code 128 includes the entire ASCII character set while UPC includes only numeric strings up to a maximum of 11 digits.

2. Meeting Prescribed Standards: Barcodes have to meet the standards set by the industrial committee monitoring barcodes. For example, the Standards Committee in the case of the UPC symbology has fixed product and manufacturer codes for a million products and has also imposed limitations on their usage. Manufacturers are expected to adhere to these standards.

3. Readability of barcodes varies with some barcodes being more easily readable than others. Readability is beneficial for barcodes to be universally acceptable.

4. Barcodes that are more readable are also found to be more durable. Durability is a desirable quality in barcodes for greater acceptability.

5. Compatibility of barcodes with other companies that work together is important to ease operations.

Some of the most well known symbologies include Code 128, Code 39, UPC, Extended Code 39, UCC 128, Codabar, MSI, EAN and so on. These however, are one dimensional or linear barcode symbologies. 2D barcode symbologies help in storing larger amounts of data on one barcode since it is done in two dimensions. Examples of 2 D barcode symbologies include Datamatrix Code, MaxiCode and PDF 417.

Listed below are some details about each of the commonly used symbologies.

Code 39
Code 39 is one of the most common symbologies used extensively in the fields of inventory, tracking, labeling and identification. It is universally acceptable and can be deciphered by most scanners. Code 39 includes numeric characters and uppercase alphabets, which can be strung into barcodes of various sizes and has a self-checking mechanism.

UPC Codes
UPC barcodes are extremely popular in the retail segment all over the world. UPC barcodes include numeric characters and when scanned, the data about the product is extracted from the database that is updated constantly with prices, stocks etc. Thus it does not store too much data in the barcode.

Code 128
Code 128 is meant for shipping labels, which require compact but high-density symbols. It generates alphanumeric codes of variable length, and spaces are included with the characters, and a check character assists in checking the barcode.

2D Barcodes
2D Barcodes enhance the information storage capacity of a barcode, and have a higher density than a linear dimensional barcode. Though expensive, they can store vast amounts of data that does not need to be extracted from databases each time the barcode is scanned. They can encode fingerprints, other biometric characters and photos along with alphanumeric characters. 2D barcodes can be read only with special scanners.

Thus barcode symbologies help in decoding the data that is encoded by barcodes through the use of scanners. Each symbology has its own unique features and technical specifications along with a very specific area of usage. There are scores of symbologies used all over the world.
