Barcode 3 Pictures
Barcode scanners are now a standard operating device for most retail stores. Because they are used repeatedly throughout the day by cashiers, they can contribute to repetitive stress injuries if not used properly. In this article we will cover three simple ergonomic tips for using a barcode scanner.
(1) Avoid Extreme Wrist Angles – When holding a bar code scanner, avoid bending the wrist up down at extreme angles. Instead hold the wrist relatively straight as you would hold a pen. Utilize the barcode scanner’s scanning range or reposition the product being scanned instead of bending or twisting your writing into an extreme angle.
(2) Avoid Bending - Avoid bending over to scan products that can’t be scanned standing up. Try scanning the barcode from a distance while standing up. Most bar codes have excellent scanning ranges and can scan products from a variety of distances. If the barcode won’t scan without bending over, bring the product closer to the scanner such as for example placing it on the counter.
If the product is too heavy to lift and the barcode scanner won’t scan from a standing position, bend at the knees and crouch down to get closer instead of bending over. This may prevent and avoid related back injuries.
(3) Avoid Reaching – Avoid reaching up to scan bar codes that are placed higher than head level. This can place stress on the shoulder joint, elbow joint as well as the wrist. If the item is too high to scan without reaching, bring the item down to scan or use a stool or small step ladder to get up higher where the barcode can be scanned at a safe distance without reaching.
As simple as they may sound, these three simple ergonomic tips can prevent repetitive stress injuries associated with the use of bar code scanners.
