Hand Held Wireless Barcode Scanner
According to my judgment, the invention of the barcode was one of the most, if not the most beneficial impact on economics of the Info Age. I’ve been there in the industry before barcode and I can tell you how much change has been brought about by the simple problem solving idea of barcode scanners that are wireless and portable. Below you will find a quick summary on the advances in the barcode tech. Also I’ll be writing about portable technology, handheld and cordless scanners along with other related technological developments.
The following examples are only a handful from a whole host of applications that barcode technologies have improved:
Retail: Ever wondered how Walmart or McDonalds managed their inventories for thousands of stores across the world, each day, efficiently? From thousands of miles away where the where the warehouses are to the global outlets, the entire logistics process is controlled through barcode. There is no way stores packed to the roof can be looking exactly the same after millions worth of purchases. Barcode goes all the way from stocking, restocking, accounting, check-out, theft-control, among others.
Manufacturing: All factories big or small and all kinds of workshops have to maintain all kinds of stocks. Raw materials, work in progress goods, finished goods, waste items, returned goods etc. Earlier floor managers used to manually check the shipping of final goods, now everything is checked and kept up to date. Human contact is minimized and movement of items is automated which gives one the power to track items and delivery times. Everything moves like clockwork.
Pending Payments/Debtors: In olden days, world over, merchants and traders used to maintain thick books of yearly accounts with payments received and pending. Many still do it the old way but for most progressive companies big and small now use the power of barcode tech to print barcode addresses on envelopes which get automatically sorted at modern postal barcode sorters. Once the invoice is sent, received, paid, the scanner notifies the central computer and the process if done. No need to continually maintain accounts. No needs to type and double-check. Today everything is a number and thus interactive. The computers handle the bill creation as well as closing.
Time and Attendance: Gone are the days of the menial punch card. Gone are the days of writing your name in the ledger every morning like a corporate slave. You would still be a slave but with barcode entrances you can at least not enter office like one every day. No need to punch out for lunch, no need to even fill in timesheets in the computer. Today’s offices digitally track and account for the activities of its staff during office hours. The payroll department used to take countless hours to get all the sorting of punching cards, overtime, absent days, etc. done. Now everything is instant. Today you don’t get checks into accounts; you get SMSes telling you that so and so amount has been deposited into your account.
