The barcode scanners are the devices, capable of reading barcode labels, and decoding the data to information that humans can easily understand. They are divided into many different types, according to the technology that they use, but all work in similar manner.
All bar code scanners have their own light source and use the different bars’ dimensions, as well as the space between the bars to read the coded information. With the help of lenses and light sensors, the information is then decoded and sent to the scanner’s output port. The 1D-barcode labels are nothing more than a group of numbers, which are represented by the vertical bars and the space between them, which makes them far easier to read than if actual numbers are used. However, the two-dimensional labels are more complicated and can store far more information that the linear barcodes. The 2D labels could have as many as one thousand characters and could contain a mini-database, which allows most of the information to be read directly from the label rather than sent to a computer, which extracts more information from a local database.
The wireless scanners, as their name suggests are cordless and ideal for larger warehouses and many industrial environments since they allow operators to scan items that are far from the scanner’s base. Some of these models are capable of reading the bar codes from a large distance and then transmit the data wirelessly to a computer, which is hundreds of feet away. The latest technologies have enabled digital cameras and digital camera phones to read bar code labels, which is slowly gaining popularity. This technology allows shoppers to simply scan certain products’ labels, build a shopping list, and send the list to the supplier’s website for home delivery. Using the same technology is also used by libraries, where users can scan the labels of books, magazines, or movies.
